Ghosts Of Cite Soleil |
If only due to the access achieved, there has never been anything quite like Asger Leth's film; it's amazing it even exists and that the director is still alive' (Variety). ‘It's an unforgettable, visceral journey into the heart of darkness, grueling poverty and anarchy' (Hollywood Reporter). That's what critics say, although people simply call it a documentary version of ‘City Of God'. You'll be able to check if the above statements are true by watching ‘Ghosts Of Cite Soleil' in documentary section of 5th ZFF. The movie directed by Asger Leth (son of acclaimed Danish director Joergen Leth) and co-directed by Miloš Lončarević takes the viewer to 2004., Cite Soleil, dangerous and poor slum of Haitian capital - Port-au-Prince. The reality of life unfolds before us as we get to know two brothers, Haitian gang leaders 2Pac and Billy and their stories intimately. Through unprecedented access, we see the brothers' love and hatred for each other, their love triangle with Lele, a French relief worker, their striving to become famous rap stars and their unsavory pact with President Aristide during his desperate grasp to maintain power in early 2004. Speaking the language of violence and knowing that staying alive in Haiti is a very day-to-day proposition, 2Pac and Bily struggle to find a better life for themselves and for their people. An expressionistic portrait of a society in chaos, shot in guerrilla style by hand-held 16mm camera, blends cinéma vérité and newsreel footage with excellent score by Haitian hip hoper Wyclif Jean. |
