'I'm Not There', an acclaimed film biography of famous music author/performer Bob Dylan directed by Todd Haynes will close 5th Zagreb Film Festival on 27th October. This music biography is a big director's comeback after his 2004. hit 'Far From Heaven', and a first Dylan biography authorised by the legend himself. Titled after one of Dylan's unpublished songs from ‘The Basement Tapes' album, the film follows six distinct characters, depicting different stages of Dylan's life, embodying a different aspect of his life story and music.
Siy Dylans are played by Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Marcus Carla Franklin, Richard Gere, Heath Ledger and Ben Whishaw. Julianne Moore appears in a role of Alice, based upon Dylan's longterm lover Joan Baez, while Michelle Williams and Charlotte Gainsbourg both have supporting roles. Haynes' poetic narrative, inspired by Dylan's lyrics is outlined by fabulous soundtrack in which acclaimed bands and authors, such as Stephen Malkmus, Iron&Wine, Calexico, Williej Nelson, Yo La Tengo, Sonic Youth, The Million Dollar Bashers, Cat Power etc. perform his songs. ‘I'm Not There' premiered at '07 Venice Film Festival, where it won Copa Volpi - best actress award for Cate Blanchett and special jury prize and CinemAvvenire.
