CIAO ANNA Photo exhibition

Zagreb Film Festival in cooperation with the Italian culture institute presents an exhibition of photographs from the life and art of Anna Magnani ‘CIAO ANNA’ in Europa Cinema from October 9th to October 25th 2008. Some stars never burn out. One of these is the star of Anna Magnani, who would be celebrating her 100th birthday if she was with us today.

Anna Magnani marked the golden age of Italian neo-realism with her films, as well as the global cinematography of the 60s. She paved the road for many future generations of actresses by fighting for the role of a strong, self-confident and temperamental woman within the frame of 7th art. 'Please don’t remove my wrinkles in editing. It has taken such a long time to finally get them', Anna Magnani said on one occasion to a photographer, a legendary Italian actress who built her movie and theatre career on her talent and expression, never doubting that beauty is measured through character and courage in life and not through breast size and sex-appealing femininity.

Her indisputable acting talent, natural performance and a courageous stand in life made her a favourite actress and muse of many directors and dramatists in 1950s and 1960s such as Vittorio De Sica, Luchina Visconti, Roberto Rossellini, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Jean Renoir, George Cukor, Sidney Lumet and Tennessee Williams, and her roles of a brave and passionate “people’s woman”, especially in movie classics ‘Roma, citta aperta’(1945.) and ‘Bellissima’ (1951.), made her so popular that there were only three kinds of postcards in Rome during her most famous period: one with city motives, one with a picture of the Pope and the one with Anna Magnani.

Among many other awards, Anna received an Oscar for her role of Serafina della Rosa in the 1956 ‘The tattooed rose’, thereby becoming the first Italian owner of this prestigious golden statue. Today, at the 100th anniversary of birth of the unforgettable Nannarella, as they affectionately called her, numerous photo exhibitions and cycles of her best movies are featured on the Venetia film festival and around the world. Zagreb Film Festival will use this opportunity to join many film festivals around the globe in remembering the great La Magnani.
