My Marlon and Brando |
As a part of the main program on 6th ZFF take a look at the feature film 'My Marlon and Brando' by the Turkish director Huseyin Karabey, an incredible true story about the love between a Turkish actress Ayça Damgaci and the Kurdish actor Hama Ali Kahn. The two of them meet and fall in love while making a movie in Turkey.
After the shooting of the film Ayça returns to Istanbul, while Hama goes back to Süleymaniye in northern Iraq. While US troops are preparing to invade Iraq, the couple exchanges passionate video messages and letters. After phone lines went dead, Ayça decided to go on a journey to find her 'Marlon and Brando' in the heart of the conflict, northern Iraq.
Ayça and Hama are playing themselves in a movie made according to their own life story, and the movie won the “Heart of Sarajevo” 2008. Award for best actress, while director Huseyin Karabey won the “Best new feature film director” award on the Tribeca film festival. This was the first feature film for Karabey, otherwise a documentary director, talked to Indiewire just before the New York premiere, and you can read the interview ovdje. |
